Did the name of this website confuse you? I have said for 18 years that "If your spine was on your face, you would take better care of it"! Think about that for a moment. We have all been taught how important caring for our teeth is. We know that we should brush our teeth when we wake and before we go to sleep, and after each meal. We should floss and use a mouth wash. We have new and improved toothpaste to control tarter, cavities and to whiten our teeth and freshen our breath. And no one would argue that this is not important. We spend thousands of dollars on our teeth (Please read the Braces Analogy), I am not knocking that, but I would ask you to think about the following:
Your teeth are the only part of your body that you can have removed and replaced. Please do not take this the wrong way, you should care for your teeth, but do you ever think about caring for your spine? Your spine is far more complex and important than your teeth. When was the last time you brushed or flossed your spine? What does that even mean? If you could see your spine, really see it, you would take much better care of it.
Another thought that a colleague of mine is known for pointing out; Dr. Eric Plasker used to talk about some of his older patients that had severe back problems, with severe degeneration, that would come in to his office after having a face lift. He was not making fun of them, but would point out how, from his perspective, it was ridiculous that they would pay to have this new face while the rest of their body was falling apart. They would be completely hunched over in pain, barely able to walk, but they LOOKED GREAT!
